EP #33: Who’s fired up for (stained) glass?

In this episode, podcaster Tracy Crow,
an author, literary agent, writing coach, and Marine Corps veteran, talks with Lisa Bason, co-owner of Mystical Reflections located near the beach in Calabash, North Carolina, about how she first became interested in this art medium, and about why so many artists today are fired up for glass!

Mystical Reflections doubles as a studio for classes and a storefront for online and local shoppers.

And as promised, here’s the photo of Tracy’s dog, Cash, alongside the stained glass window hanging she commissioned from Lisa. Ahhhmazing!

Our Story

In The Beginning...

It all started as a hobby among friends in Burlington, NC. There came a time where they had ‘enough’ glass that an outlet needed to be found so that the art could be shared. One of the family members stated that he had so much glass in his home that when travelers passed by, he had to stop and pray! Soon the hobby became an obsession and Mystical Reflections began to travel to art and craft shows. Soon after we explored the notion of owning our own store.

Coming to Calabash...

The three of us spent years coming to Calabash visiting the stained glass store, Reflections. Judy learned the art of stained glass from Pati Lewellyn, who was the owner of the store.  The addiction quickly took hold of Judy and soon after Felecia joined the craze.

On March 18, 2013 destruction hit. An early morning fire destroyed the strip mall on Carter Drive, where Reflections was located. It was a total loss for all businesses that were located there. Pati began to rebuild her business of 20+ years. They picked up the pieces and started over in a building that Pati’s husband, Darius, owned.

Sadly, in January of 2014, Pati passed. Reflections was then managed by local artists Judy Rodriguez and Suzanne Weyeneth who valiantly kept the store open. In August 2015, Mystical Reflections purchased Reflections from Darius.

Looking to the Future...

Judy and Suzanne are the two who happily greet you when you enter the store. Both are highly skilled artists that can assist you with anything from the choice of glass to questions surrounding technique.

We have expanded our gift line of finished stained glass to include jewelry, stone art (handmade) and paintings from a local artist. Stained and fused classes are offered for all skill levels. Work shops and night classes are a great opportunity for a ladies night!

Mystical Reflections is now listed on several sites such as TripAdvisor and Google.

Our Team

Lisa Bason

Lisa Bason

Lisa has been doing stained glass since 2008. She will be the first one to tell you that at first, she had absolutely no interest in stained glass until her mom needed some help completing some pieces for an upcoming show. After that, Lisa was hooked. Lisa attended Alamance Community College for commercial art design. Her creative nature and ‘out of the box’ thinking makes her our resident design artist. If you want any idea turned into a stained glass pattern, Lisa is the one to talk to. Lisa is currently employed full time elsewhere but finds as much time as she can to spend in the store and churning her creative juices.

Felecia Blair

Felecia Blair

Felecia has been doing stained and fused glass since 2006. She is the ‘mouthpiece’ of the organization. She loves the marketing and public relations side almost as much as doing glass. She is currently employed full time elsewhere yet squeezes in as much time as possible to spend in the store and experiment in the funky art world of fused glass.

Judy Rodriguez

Judy Rodriguez

Judy has been doing stained glass since 2004 and is a long time resident of Ocean Isle Beach. She will be the one you find minding the store. Judy has vast experience in copper foiling, lead and doing stained glass repairs. In her previous ‘work’ life, Judy was an assistant clerk of court for the Alamance County court system.
